PAUSE 4 PATIENCE

These days, everyone seems to be in a hurry, IMPATIENT even.  I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me recently.  Someone says something to me and, if I don't respond within a MILLISECOND, the person is repeating what they said again, loudly.  What's up with that?  I mean, can I take a 1/2 second to breathe before I speak back?  I have experienced this several times with store clerks:

Clerk:  "Push the green button on the keypad."
Me:  (Immediately lifting my hand toward the keypad.)
Clerk:  (Before my finger reaches the green button) "MA'AM, PUSH the GREEN button on the KEYPAD."
Me:  (to myself) "Grrrrrrrrrr..."

It's also happened when I am having a conversation with a family member AND even when someone is yelling to me from another room.  My gosh, half the time I can't even understand a person when they're calling to me from another room, much less have I had the time to hear it, figure out what they're asking, and open my mouth to respond...before they're yelling at me again, louder and now irritated, too.

What happened to the normal ebb-and-flow, give-and-take of conversing with another person?  I know folks are busy and like to move quickly in life, but let us not forget the basic etiquette and allowing the other person a moment to gather their thoughts and respond.  PAUSING is not a crime!

  1. Y'know what I hate? The people at the fast food drive ins. I barely finish getting out the first item of my order and they're already spitting out my total and ordering me to drive around. Excuse me? I'm not finished ordering yet! Just shut up and listen! And then - when I get to the end of my order I always say "and that's all" to which they invariably reply "will there be anything else?" causing me to say again "no, THAT'S ALL!"

    Ah, I feel better now.
